COURSE DESIGN
All who are interested in delivering Human Services in Ireland today are aware of the toll that Suicide has taken on families, individuals and communities in every part of the Country. Largely because of our cultural orientation and our value for human life, we are interested in and seek solutions to this complex problem.
This course design draws on a variety of skills and strategies associated with support, meditation, counselling, consultation, persuasion, psychology and attitude formation. It is based primarily on the person-centred approach to helping and adheres faithfully to the principles of the helping relationship that give it its ethical quality. It strives to meet the needs of many who wish to offer support and help but often feel that the knowledge and interpersonal skills they possess need refining and upgrading in order to be efficient and competent in addressing the issues raised by suicide.
While no course of training can adequately address all aspects of a human problem, this course is quite comprehensive. It will have particular significance for Counsellors,Community Outreach workers, Teachers, Gardai, Probation Officers, Healthcare personnel, Nurses, Social Workers and Guardians of the young and old. People who have responsibility for Adolescents will also have a special interest in fine-tuning their responses to those whom they fear are suicidal or those who are grieving in the aftermath of sudden and tragic death. The main emphasis is on Prevention, Intervention, but special care is also given to suicide Postvention and the skills needed to offer an effective intervention in either area.
The course is presented in three sections. Section 1 deals with a HISTORIC VIEW OF SUICIDE, the origins of present-day attitudes to it, the present provision in prevention and postvention in Ireland set against a European background.
Section 2 addresses SUICIDE PREVENTION. Key theories and concepts are examined and a wide variety of risk factors explored, This section is mainly experiential and skills based and includes a number of exercises in personal development, casework examples and practical issues related to prevention. Stimulus material presented in group sessions will be augmented by the use of appropriate video and audio tape recordings, handouts and other illustrative media.
Section 3 is dedicated to SUICIDE POSTVENTION. The impact of suicide on a family, individual and community will be studied and means of alleviating the pain and grief that ensues in the wake of suicide will receive special attention, Postvention skills and strategies will be explored and practised and this section will have an important element of personal and professional development. Ethical issues will also be addressed.
The course of training outlined above has been designed as an Adult and Continuing Education initiative. It will be of interest to all who are interested in developing their knowledge and skills in the special field of Suicide. It addresses important human issues that are often encountered by all who are engaged in the caring professions.
