Support Groups

Console facilitates two types of support groups:
  • An eight-week therapeutic support group facilitated by a counsellor. This group usually consists of approximately ten people that attend group therapy for one night per week for eight weeks. This provides people bereaved through suicide the space to work through their grief and loss in the company of others that also wish to grieve well and learn to cope without their loved one.
  • A monthly open support group facilitated by a counsellor. This space provides people bereaved an opportunity to meet those that have suffered a similar loss thereby gaining support and understanding. This is also available to those that have completed the eight week therapeutic support group thereby accessing long term support.

Console staff are available to discuss the benefits and level of commitment required for each group which may be of help deciding which group would be most suitable and helpful for you at this particular time.

Support and Therapy groups for people bereaved through suicide provide an opportunity to meet other people who have been through a similar experience. This group can provide:
  • A sense of community and support
  • An empathic environment and give a sense of belonging when the bereaved person feels disassociated from the rest of the world.
  • The hope that normality can be reached eventually
  • Experience in dealing with difficult anniversaries or special occasions
  • Opportunities to learn new ways of approaching problems
  • A sounding board to discuss fears and concerns
  • A safe setting where free expression of grief is acceptable, confidentiality is observed, and compassion and non-judgemental attitudes prevail.
